Abbott to announce plan for re-opening state economy

Posted: Updated:
TEXAS -

Governor Abbott is expected to announce guidelines today for gradually reopening the Texas economy.

The governor closed many businesses in an order that expires April 30th. That's this Thursday.

Abbott already started easing some restrictions on businesses, allowing retail to-go options and loosening rules on non-essential medical procedures. The governor said large urban centers where the coronavirus outbreak is more severe, would begin reopening under different rules than rural areas that have fewer cases.  The concern here is doing too much too quickly and spreading the virus but governor Abbott indicated there will still be strong social distancing rules in place.  His plan is to use businesses which remained open during the lockdown as an example.

Governor Abbott will speak this afternoon at 2:30 to lay out his plan for the way forward. We'll have live coverage on FOX34, and here online at FOX34.com and in the FOX34 news app.
