LUBBOCK, Texas -

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is pumping $3 billion into the ag industry to benefit families facing food insecurity.

The Food Assistance Program will deliver boxes of dairy, produce and meat using food banks. It will spend about $300 million a month for the next six months to get those products from farm to table.

The South Plains Food Bank reports 1,000 new families requesting assistance in just the past month. Total it has distributed about 1.2 million pounds of food since then. A normal month is about a third of that.
