Emergency-preparedness items for purchase tax-free this weekend

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

This weekend certain emergency-preparedness items will be available to purchase without a sales tax.

Shopping in-store may not be possible due to social distancing, but emergency supplies can be ordered online or by phone without the tax.

Texas-based Offers.com created this guide so consumers know exactly what's tax-free:

• The items must be delivered and paid for by Monday morning or the seller can accept the purchase and schedule a later delivery.

• Tax free items include portable generators priced under $3,000 and emergency ladders and hurricane shutters priced under $300. Emergency necessities like axes, batteries, smoke detectors and first aid kits priced under $75 are also included.

• Items that are not tax exempt include camping supplies, chainsaws, plywood, tents and more.

You do not need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the tax exemption.

Note that shipping and handling charges are included in the sales price for determining tax-free eligibility. So, if you buy an emergency ladder for $299, and shipping costs $10, the total cost would be considered $309, and the item would not be tax-exempt.
