Arrington: Rural hospitals should be eligible for small biz loans

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK -

Lubbock Congressman Jodey Arrington wants the government to support rural hospitals with small business loans.

He's asked the Trump Administration to change Small Business Administration rules, allowing these facilities to qualify for federal support. This would be the same Paycheck Protection Program available to many other small businesses.

Arrington says this would allow these critical points of car to stay open through the COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond.

"We were already losing hospitals, well over a hundred in the past several years, because it's just an unsustainable system," Arrington said.

"They don't have enough patients, they have a disproportionate share of uninsured and underinsured, and they have requirements and compliance and regulations that make no sense for a small hospital, relative to some big hospital in an urban center."

In many rural communities, hospitals and medical centers are the largest or among the largest local employers.

84 other representatives have signed on to this change.
