Last Tuesday, Covenant launched rapid testing for COVID-19. The drive-thru clinic has already tested 175 people for the virus. It's a nose swab and the results are ready in about 15 minutes.
While the test has given quick results, doctor Beth Cochran says it's just as important they are able to let people know who have been exposed much more quickly.
"Rather than waiting for this result for 3 days then notifying them that they've been exposed, we can get their answer in 15 minutes and then see who has been exposed to the virus and carrying the virus," Cochran said.
She says flattening the curve has given the hospital much more flexibility.
"It gives us a good chance to get ready as hospitals, get ready with our protective equipment and get ready with this testing. We've really been able to dramatically increase our ability to test to know who has got it and who doesn't over the last few weeks." Cochran said.
While they've made some strides, Cochran says there is still more work to be done to get where they want to be.
"We still aren't able to test everybody. It'd be wonderful if we were able to test all of Lubbock and see who has it and stop it there but we just aren't there yet. We have significantly more tests available compared to a few weeks ago and we've been able to extend our testing criteria a little further."
Not everyone who goes to the site will get a test. If you think you may be eligible for a test, call Covenant's hotline (806-725-TEST).
