Texas representatives request nation's ERs treat Medicare patients

LUBBOCK, Texas -

In a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 14 Texas representatives are requesting the agency pay back freestanding emergency centers that are able to serve Medicare and Medicaid patients during the coronavirus pandemic.

Currently, free standing ER's are not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement due to federal regulations.

Recognizing emergency centers as Medicare and Medicaid approved facilities could alleviate over-crowding in hospitals and provide rural and under-served patients with easier access to care.

Texas has more than 200 freestanding ER centers with a total of 1,500 hospital beds that can be used to help treat those infected by the virus.
