Observing Easter among a pandemic: churches adapting to online, radio services

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Social distancing has made for new adjustments in finding faith and safely observing the Easter holiday.

Social distancing guidelines, stay-at-home orders and the disaster declaration for the City of Lubbock are still in place. Meaning families will have to observe Easter weekend during this new normal.

Families are allowed to celebrate together inside their homes, but city officials discourage large public gatherings.

President Trump with this message of hope ahead of the holiday.

"Though we will not be able to gather together with one another as we normally would on Easter, we can use this sacred time to focus on prayer, reflection and growing in our personal relationship with God," he said.

Despite being quarantined, one Lubbock church was able to capture a virtual baptism last week. Executive Pastor for the City Church Brandon Gwinn said while it's not traditional, technology has allowed for more ways to get people connected during the coronavirus outbreak.

"Times like these people are just more open spiritually than they would be normally, right? And so it seems like we're really able to connect with people and give them a little bit of what they're craving in this time where we're all shut into our houses and isolated," Gwinn said.

Several churches have adapted to social distancing, with Sunday Easter services to be broadcast over the radio

The following services will be on the radio Sunday:
• Aldersgate Church, 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on 107.7 YES FM
• Broadway Church of Christ 10:30 a.m. on 93.7 The Eagle
• Generations Church 10 a.m. on 107.7 YES FM
• Lakeridge Methodist 9:15 a.m. on 93.7 The Eagle
• Our Lady of Guadalupe 9 a.m. on Magic 106.5

There are also several activities families can do together from home, like decorating the house, making homemade Easter baskets or a virtual family gathering.
