Lubbock had its first virtual adoption on Friday morning.
Due to the coronavirus, Rusty and Whitney Smith adopted 15-month-old Khailynn through a Zoom video conference meeting.
Khailynn is the fourth child the Smith family has fostered through nonprofit Buckner International and Buckner Foster Care and Adoption in Lubbock. Khailynn was six months old when she was first placed with the Smiths, and she will be the couples' first adoption.
Buckner International's foster and adoption programs haven't stopped and encourage people to foster to adopt.
"We're always in need of new foster families, we're always in need of new foster to adopt families, we also have a waiting Texas program which is basically any child that's ready, and just waiting to be adopted out of foster care is for that program," Jennifer Petersen, Regional Director for Buckner International, said. "So all three of the programs are always in need. We're doing everything we can to be able to continue that process and make it as quick as possible."
Organizers say although everyone was not able to be at the adoption in person, they all watched happily through the live streamed meeting.
