Aguirre: 'Still plenty of jobs in Lubbock'

LUBBOCK, Texas -

6.6 million filed for unemployment last week. That's four times the rate since the beginning of March.

More than 500,000 Texans filed in the last 19 days. There were 700,000 total applicants in 2019. Texas is likely to hit a year's pace in a month.

You can file for unemployment online or on the phone. Cisco Gamez, who works for the workforce commission, says they are making adjustments.

"We've moved over 200 people from our security department into unemployment insurance services," Gamez said. "Later this week we are moving an additional 250 to do the same."

Gamez says the state is moving an additional hundred staffers to call centers.

As far as West Texas goes, the numbers are increasing. Martin Aguirre with Texas Workforce Solutions said as far as Lubbock is concerned there are still plenty of jobs.

"Still have a lot of food service. The hospitals are obviously stretched and they would take anyone that needs to help. The logistics centers are distributing all the goods that are still left and we still have goods," Aguirre said.

While applications are using social distancing guidelines, that's just a minor speed bump. Aguirre says the ability to team up has made things easier.

"The Lubbock Economic Development Alliance has also posted employers that they work with that are looking for help," he said. "The Chamber of Commerce is telling me the same thing. We always work together."
