New Mexico reports 35 additional COVID-19 cases

Posted: Updated:

New Mexico has reported 35 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the state's total case count to 315.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Tuesday a man in his 40's with an underlying medical condition died from the coronavirus. He is the 15th New Mexican the virus has killed.

There are three cases in Curry County, two cases in Lea County and one in Roosevelt County.

Gov. Grisham has ordered all residents to stay at home, except for outings absolutely necessary for health, safety and welfare.

"Social distancing is the most meaningful tool we have. The less transmission, the more lives we'll save; the less transmission, the fewer people that will have to go to the hospital; less transmission, the more control we have over hospitalization and surges," she said.

The governor says the state's working on plans to grow its hospitals and ICU capacity and acquiring personal protective equipment. She says the White House's orders for states to acquire it themselves has pitted states against each other in a "draconian system" of competition.

As of today, there are 26 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Health Department.
