Social Media saving small businesses

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Owning a small business is a challenge, especially during the Covid19 crisis and the recent "stay at home" order.

But Piper Boutique in Lubbock has hope that better days are ahead.

"It's gonna get better, we're gonna get through this," Owner of Piper, Shara Konechney said. "We've been through a lot of things and this isn't going to get us down."

Konechney and staff of five women are using this time as an opportunity to get creative on social media.

Piper's Creative Director, Karson Villanueva said communicating with customers is the best part of the job. Now, they just have to do that virtually.

"We've been going 'live' on Instagram daily and we do giveaways during every 'live' to make sure people are feeling loved," Villanueva said. "If people weren't doing social media and websites before, now's the time that they'll realize how important it is."

Piper Boutique has more than 30,000 followers on Instagram (@piperlubbock), giving it a massive reach. The platform has become a crucial tool to drive online sales.

"Customers DM us and tell us who they want to try an item on." Villanueva added. "Our stories are actually specific to each employee, so customers can go see different girls styles, sizes and body types."

However, Piper owner assures that its following didn't happen overnight.

"8,000 posts and 8 years later, and it's just literally given us a firm ground," Konechney said.

Even with Piper's strong social media presence, it still relies on the community to help spread the word. And that's where the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce stepped in to launch the "LBK Local Challenge" last week.

"That's been very well received," Lubbock Chamber President and CEO, Eddie McBride said. "I'm very happy about making that contribution for people to know both who's open and who's working."

Whether it's people shopping online or participating in the #LBKLocalChallenge, Piper has seen a lot of support.

"Lubbock is wonderful about putting their arms around small businesses," Konechney said. "I'm so thankful."
