LPD: No need for documentation during stay-at-home order

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock's stay-at-home order went into effect at midnight Sunday night.

It bans any gathering outside a single household.

Mayor Dan Pope urges everyone to stay in their home unless they are an essential worker, getting groceries or going to the doctor.

When it comes to enforcing it, there was some confusion.

"We started to get a lot of questions this [Monday} morning about whether or not people had to have documentation to be traveling around the city, showing that they're essential personnel or that they were going to the grocery store," LPD spokeswoman Allison Matherly said.

On Monday, LPD quickly clarified the answer was "no."

Matherly says police still need probable cause to pull drivers over, meaning you will not have to prove that you are out on the roads for one of the reasons mentioned above.

But the force does need the everyone's help to hold each other accountable.

"I think it really takes the public coming together and saying, 'we really do want to flatten the curve as quickly as possible and we're going to stay at home and follow these guidelines.' And that's really what we're asking the public to do at this point," Matherly said.

LPD is working with the Fire Marshal's office to enforce social gathering guidelines.

Violating the state's disaster declarations, the governor says, could lead to a $1000 fine or up to 6 months in jail.

Most people have been responsive, Matherly says.

"I we have continued lack of compliance, if we're being called back to the same locations multiple times, or if individuals are unwilling to comply, we will have to look at further enforcement actions."

If you do know of a business or individual, you can call the LPD  non-emergency line at (806) 775-2865.

The stay-at-home order is effective until Friday night.
