Oduduru doesn't 'plan on just registering' at next Olympics

LUBBOCK, Texas -

On Tuesday, the Olympic Games were postponed until 2021. So Texas Tech athletes, including former sprinter Divine Oduduru, will have to wait a little longer.

From running the third-ever fastest indoor 200 meter (20.08 seconds), to leading Texas Tech to its first NCAA Outdoor Championship, his collegiate career came to an end after the 2019 run. The Nigerian turned pro and was training for the Olympics with big aspirations.

"I seriously believe that with the way my season went last year that I am coming with the mentality of getting a metal," Oduduru said. "I don't want to go to any competition to just register my presence."

"He is the greatest NCAA 100-200 meter sprinter of all time ," Texas Tech Track and Field coach Wes Kittley said.

While training in Lubbock for Tokyo, the games were canceled due to the pandemic. While he was down, Divine was expecting it.

"People are dying every day," Oduduru said. "What makes you an athlete is you being healthy."

It's hard to say if the extra year of preparation will help or hurt his chances next summer.

"I think by the time we would've started competing, we would've known what was happening. Being realistic, I think I would've had much more to say of how it impacted me if I had already competed in my first competition before all of this happened," Oduduru said.

With all the facilities closed, Divine is training as much as he can at home in Lubbock. He's pondering different ways to use his extra down time that he now has.

"Now everybody is just doing the TikTok videos. I think I liked the way the society is going right now. The way everybody is trying to be crazy indoors. I think I'm going to get mine started too."

If and when he starts making videos on TikTok, we'll have a link.
