Nursing students on the front-lines

LUBBOCK, Texas -

"Right now, with the pandemic, we need everyone and anybody to step up to help the medical professionals. We're seeing more and more patients daily come in with symptoms," nursing student Kinsey Edwards said.

Edwards is earning her RN-BSN at Lubbock Christian University.

She's set to graduate in May.

Dr. Cindy Ford, the Director of the nursing program at the university says their students have already been on the front-lines of this pandemic.

"All the students in our program are already registered nurses working full time in our community," Dr. Ford explained.

Working a job and going to school is already a challenge for many.

Now, the full force of the COVID-19 crisis has hit these students hard.

"It's just a lot of changes for them, and it can feel overwhelming as they are students and they are trying to complete their coursework for their Spring semester, manage their children and also fulfill their work requirements for their employer," Dr. Ford said.

"So you have this everyday stress of work life and then, if a person is going to walk through the door, how sick are they going to be? Are they going to have this pandemic disease that's going on right now?" Edwards said. "And then you come home and worry if you're going to give it to your family."

She makes sure to take every precaution to keep her family healthy.

"I take my shoes off, come into the house... take my clothes off, put them in the washer and head straight to the shower. When my step son is here, I do not hug him,  I do not touch him," Edwards explained.

Though she is scared, she says it does not change the passion she feels for her career.

"You get up everyday and take care of each patient like they're your own family member. And you don't really worry what's next."

The best way to help, is to continue practicing social distancing, to prevent the spread of the virus, as much as possible.
