Look Around Lubbock: nonprofits offer at-home entertainment

Posted: Updated:

Non profits in our area are providing virtual entertainment.

"We may have a few explosions along the way," Science Spectrum Education Coordinator Alana Baliga said.

The Science Spectrum is still providing content through Facebook live videos with science experiments and activities you can do using items you already have at your house.

"Scheduling some animal feedings and things like that where the public can interact with us and ask us questions," Baliga said.

Baliga said learning even while school is out is very important.

"We're very inquisitive people, very needing to be active and engaged," Baliga said.

Julie Hodges with the National Ranching Heritage Center said they were ready to keep things going when the Coronavirus struck, with a smart app. There are also downloadable activities and virtual tours on the website.

"You can tour all of our structures, you can hear stories about them, you can even look at artifacts that are inside the buildings from the comfort of your ipad or smart phone at home," Hodges said.

Hodges compares the pioneer life and simplicity to how they set up their technology.

"It was really important to try to make things work, to be resourceful, so we try to capture that in our structures, but also we try to expand that through technology so that more people are able to learn about our heritage and our past," Hodges said.

Kids and even parents can learn anything from Spanish exploration, the cattle industry, to how their ancestors lived back in the day.

"We are both acknowledging the past, the settlement of this area, the economy beginnings in this area, and how people live every day life, but ranching is something that's still going on."
