Medical students form COVID-19 task force

LUBBOCK, Texas -

"This is a unique situation. And because we know of the overwhelming situation and effects of covid on the healthcare system in Italy and now in New York, the governor is really forward planning," Dr. Steven Berk said.

On Tuesday, Governor Abbott called for everyone who was able, to mobilize to assist the healthcare system.

Tech students are doing just that.

"They've actually volunteered to do babysitting for physicians who may have a 2 physician family. They volunteer to do errands, to walk dogs," Dr. Berk said.

Ellen Wilson and Jimmy Bunch, both second year medical students, formed a task force inspired by other movements by med students nationwide.

"We want to be high achieving individuals and so when there is a need in our community, we want to be those people that reach out and help in any way we can," Wilson said.

These students are not just providing essential support to the doctors and nurses who are risking their lives.
They are also doing research on homemade mask efficiency and setting up lines for telemedicine.

"We have a pretty robust team on the task force. From here it's all about recruitment and getting people involved," Bunch said.

Although the are not on the front lines, they are certainly getting the most important lesson of their career.

"As medical students, to have a chance to contribute to this worldwide fight, and this worldwide push against something none of us have really ever seen before, is an incredible opportunity," Bunch said.

"They will learn from physicians that are on the front lines that our profession is very prestigious, it's very well paid, however it comes with enormous responsibility and sometimes even personal danger. And they will see that and hopefully, learn from that," Dr. Burke.

Nearly 100 medical students from across the TTHSC campuses have pitched in.
