Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

From the South Plains Food Bank:

The South Plains Food Bank is experiencing a 45% increase in the number of families needing food assistance. In an effort to maintain social distancing, South Plains Food Bank operating protocols have changed.

The food bank remains open for regular hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), but limiting the number of visitors in the building. People needing assistance are asked to follow the protocols listed on the SPFB website, as well as SPFB's social media sites for assistance.

Several food bank agencies have temporarily closed. Call 211 or visit to find the closest food bank agency.

Anyone receiving food from the food bank must still must qualify for assistance under USDA guidelines for USDA commodities. Following these guidelines helps ensure the food bank will be able to serve the largest number of families possible.

SPFB sponsored Kids Cafe sites have closed due to COVID-19. SPFB's children's feeding program has been in constant contact with local community centers and school districts. We have placed our feeding sites as well as all school districts feeding sites on our website.

In light of recommendations from the CDC and local government to keep gatherings at a minimum of 10 people. SPFB is not asking for volunteers at this time. SPFB is also not asking for food donations at this time. Instead, SPFB is asking for financial donations.

SPFB has contingency plans in place with several groups and members of the community. SPFB continues to operate its mobile pantry program and senior box distribution program. The food banks also does not deliver food boxes to residential areas. SPFB will keep Lubbock and the surrounding areas informed of any changes on its website as well as social media.
