English Newsom Cellars donates alcohol to be made into hand sanitizer

LUBBOCK, Texas -

English Newsom Cellars is donating 1,000 gallons of premium vintages to be made into hand sanitizer.

The FDA recently loosened regulations on the production of hand sanitizers by allowing companies it does not regulate to make the product. It will help companies get regulated in the process, allowing more sanitizers to hit the market.

English Newsom is working with HYE Rum to produce the sanitizers. The winery's owners say the opportunity to give back was easy since sales are currently low, they already had the wine produced, and it was needed.

"We have completely finished this wine, this wine would be normally ready to sit and age or to bottle," Steve Newsom said "So we've been able to cut out all of that process for HYE Rum to be able to take it straight to distillation. That's extremely fortunate. If something like this would have happened during harvest, it would have really delayed things."

Owners say one thing they like about the company they are donating to, is that the sanitizers will go to hospitals and first responders on the front line of stopping COVID-19.
