Lubbock ISD provides curbside meal pickup

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Many students rely on school for more than education, and Lubbock ISD is filling a critical need for them.

On Monday, Lubbock ISD began offering curbside meal pickup to kids in need. For the first day, employees prepared 7,200 meals. They are not limited to enrolled students. They are for anyone under the age of 18.

"Planning the curbside meals has been exciting and a challenge," Lori Johnson, child nutrition director at Lubbock ISD, said. "Its just been a lot of logistics to work through in a short amount of time, but all for the best reason."

Families can pick up meals at 16 campuses, and there are more than 20 buses delivering food across the city. Johnson said most of the district's more than 27,000 students rely on the school for at least two meals a day.

"Making sure that we are doing something to meet that need when they're not physically able to come to school is something that's near and dear to the heart of this district," she said.

In addition, she said the district's limiting volunteers and practicing social distancing.

Sergio Farias, chef manager for Aramark, said the teams are providing lunch and next day's breakfast.

"We we wanted just to help out in the community, and be able to provide meals for them," Farias said.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the future, Farias said they are prepared to provide meals until at least the end of the year.

"We have talked to the providers. They're ready to provide for whatever we need, the orders, food, and all that stuff," he said. "Depending on how long it takes, we'll be doing it."
