Lubbock-based company to produce hand sanitizer for essential workers

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Hand sanitizer is flying off the shelves in the age of COVID-19.

But what about the people who need it most? Like doctors and hospitals on the front lines of the pandemic.

Some companies are doing their part, including Lubbock-based bio-tech start-up Attwill Medical Solutions.

"We just sort of said to ourselves, you know, we're a bio-tech company. Our mission is to bring things to market to reduce the burden on the health care system," Director of Business Development Angus Jackson said.

The company also wants to help out other essential employees during this time.

"If managers at supermarkets who need more hand sanitizer, reach out to us. Any delivery drivers. Anyone who's coming into contact with the public, we'd like them to reach out to us, and hopefully we can help," Jackson said. "I think they're doing a lot for the community, and if you can thank the people working at the grocery store, they're facing a lot more of the public than the average person."

This comes, as the FDA is now allowing companies and individuals it doesn't regulate to produce the sanitizers to meet demand.

The FDA is laying out guidelines on how to produce and distribute the products. The bio-tech company will produce hand sanitizer, by the gallon.

The recipe, is fairly simple.

"Hydrogen peroxide, ethanol and some glycerol that's derived from plants," Jackson said.

The only cost to buyers will be to cover production.

The start-up does a lot of work at The Hub on Texas Tech's campus, but the actual production will be taking place 1000 miles away outside of Madison, Wisconsin.

"With the current ingredients, we can make 1000 gallons and we already have orders totaling 350 gallons," Jackson said.

Production is expected to begin next week.
