Worshiping from home: churches transition to online services

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

With Governor Abbott's executive order limiting group gathering to no more than 10 people, places of worship in Lubbock are keeping health in mind.

Churches of all denominations are participating to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with the Bishop of Lubbock announcing the cancellation of public masses last week.

Lead pastor for the City Church Clayton Walker says although their services are already streamed online, empty pews can pose as a challenge.

A lot of its been strategizing. How do we keep people connected at this time, how do we get people to not just sit back on their couch and watch passively, but to actively engage the service," Walker said.

Mayor Dan Pope followed Gov. Abbott's suit and limited public gatherings in Lubbock Friday. Mayor Pope mentioned the creative ways people are coming together.

"I was told that they have a church that's having their church service this weekend and you drive to church and you park in the parking lot," Mayor Pope said. "They're going to stream it to your radio and you'll be in the parking lot. It's like going to a drive-in picture, but you're going to get it that way. I think it's creative, I think it creates a bit of a sense of community. I applaud that kind of effort."

The executive order will go through April 3, unless extended. Church services could continue to be online until the virus subsidies.

"We live in a great time where technology is allowing us to stay connected even during times like this," Walker said.
