Science Spectrum and YWCA keeping kids busy

LUBBOCK, Texas -

With schools being closed until at least April 3rd due to the Corona Virus, the Science Spectrum and YWCA stepped up to help educate and entertain kids in Lubbock.

"I've wanted to do digital content with our education team for awhile, but this gives us the perfect launching point to actually do that," Science Spectrum Educator, Alana Baliga said. "We will be providing livestreams on our Facebook page as well as some other video content."

Starting next week, the Science Spectrum team will share two streams on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

"In the morning segments we'll try and do something you can't do at home," Baliga said. "And then in the afternoon we're going to expand on things that you can do at home with your kiddos, with things you already have in your house."

Other video content will include virtual tours of different exhibits and quality time with a few animals.

"We'll get some closeup interviews with our animal friends, as well as our animal staff," Baliga added. "We will also show some animal feedings and stuff like that where the public can interact with us and ask us questions."

Additionally, the Science Spectrum staff plans to offer curb-side science kits that people can pick-up and take home to enjoy with their families.

As for the kids who are not able to stay home, the YWCA is extending spring break camps and offering childcare.

"I think the idea behind these extended camps is really to help out in a time of need, where parents still need to work and kids still need to learn," YWCA Chief Executive Officer, Glenda Mathis said. "Regardless of what age child they have, whether it's an infant or a school aged child, we'll be able to assist them in our facilities across the city."

To ensure safety, the staffers are following the CDC and American Association of Pediatric guidelines when it comes to dealing with a pandemic. The "Y" is also offering bagged lunches for anyone under 18 each weekday.

The YWCA's hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
