Texas Tech students asked to move out of residence halls

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

To help manage COVID-19 prevention efforts, Texas Tech has locked down the residence halls to only allow access to those who signed up to stay during spring break.

For students who signed up to live in the dorms during Spring Break, they are asked to move out by by Sunday, March 22. If students are unable to complete their move-out by March 22, the university advises them to contact housing immediately at housing@ttu.edu.

Students who left for Spring Break must sign up for a date between March 23 and May 15 to retrieve their belongings.

Administrators say this allows the school to manage the number of students in the dorms and practice social distancing.

The university outlines frequently asked questions and measures being taken on its website

Here are full details from Texas Tech's website:

Are the Texas Tech University Residence Halls Open?

To help manage this process, we have locked down the residence halls to only allow access to those who signed up to stay during  Spring Break. For those students who need housing and did not sign up to stay during Spring Break, please contact the housing office at housing@ttu.edu.

What is the procedure for moving out of the residence halls?

  1. If you are currently on-campus, you do not need to sign-up for a check-out time. You should begin moving out immediately and will need to complete your move-out by March 22, if possible. If you are unable to complete your move-out by March 22, please contact housing immediately.
  2. If you are currently away from campus, you will need to sign-up for a check-out time. Use this link to select a day and time.

    • Students can sign up for a day and time between March 23 – May 15 to come and retrieve their belongings.
    • This process allows us to manage the number of students in the hall and practice social distancing.
    • ID access will only be active for students starting at the time signed up to check-out and then three hours after that designated time. (Ex: Check-out sign up time: 8:00 a.m., the ID access will only be good until 11:00 a.m.)
  3. Removing your belongings out of your residence hall room.
    • Bring your own packing, moving, and cleaning supplies.
    • Do NOT park in any disabled parking spaces or block a fire lane. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed for safety.
  4. Only the Express Check-out process will be used: (See specific expectations for Express Check-out below)
    • The Express Check-out envelope will be attached to each door for each student occupying the space. Additional envelopes will be available at the hall office along with the steps for checking out.
    • When you have vacated and cleaned the room, please make sure you have checked off all of the steps listed on the envelope and checklist document.
    • Put your key in the envelope and drop the Express Check-out envelope in the outgoing mail slot located either near the desk or by the mailboxes in each hall.
    • There will be no room inspections upon check-out. However, egregious or intentional damages to the room may be charged to the resident.
  5. If you have already moved all of your belongings out and do not need to return to campus, please contact housing at housing@ttu.edu to make arrangements for returning your key and getting officially checked out.

How Do I Sign Up for a Check-out Time?

  1. The number of students able to sign up for each check-out time is limited to five (5). Students will be allowed to sign up for a check-out time each hour at each residence hall between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F and 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday beginning March 23rd – May 15th.

How are you going to maintain social distancing when so many students are moving out?

  • We will support social distancing by the check-out schedule we have developed.
  • We encourage all students to practice social distancing during this time on-campus.

Will there be emergency housing for students?

We will not be able to provide housing to students who do not have a current USH contract. Additionally, please be advised that for emergency housing:

  • Only lock-out keys will be handled through the desk. All other operations will be handled via phone or email.
  • No equipment check-outs will be available
  • Report maintenance issues via the Fixit site on the main housing.ttu.edu webpage
  • There will not be any residence hall programming
  • No guests will be permitted

For students who do not have another option, University Student Housing may be able to provide emergency housing through May 15th. A modified Scarlet Dining Plan will be available to use at open dining locations.

The University will review requests by email at housing@ttu.edu from students wanting emergency housing. Students will need to choose one of the following circumstances in order to qualify for emergency housing:

  • The student's permanent residence is outside of the United States, and the student is unable to travel to that country.
  • The student's academic department has deemed that a required academic activity (e.g., internship, practicum, clinical work) will continue and that the student is required to remain on campus.
  • The student has personal circumstances preventing them from leaving campus. Some examples include:
    • The student is an independent student
    • The student is part of the foster care system or has aged out of the foster system
    • The student does not have a permanent address
    • Returning home would represent a health and safety threat to the student or individuals who live at the student's home
    • Returning home will prevent the student from accessing their courses remotely because of insufficient internet and technology capabilities

Documentation may be requested to support the reasons in the student's request.

Can I get emergency housing if I am self-isolating or quarantined?

Unfortunately, out of safety and precaution, for students that remain in the residence halls, we do not have the facilities capable of providing student quarantine.

If I am in emergency housing can I come and go as I want?

  • We recommend students limit their travel in and out of the residence hall.
  • Please, no visitors or overnight guests.

Will university staff be on campus to help support students in emergency housing?

There will be staff on-call to support students and respond to emergencies. All hall offices will be closed. If a student needs a lock-out key, they will need to call the on-call number provided at the office.

What about refunds?

We understand that the question of housing refunds is an important one and we continue to explore options to address these concerns. We will share additional information in the near future.

Will my financial aid change?

Please contact the Office of Financial Services to determine if your financial aid will be affected.

If I have an outstanding conduct case, will I still have to meet with a conduct office? What happens with my sanctions?

Please contact the Office of Student Integrity to find out more information.

What if I am unable or don't want to leave? Am I able to stay on campus?

Only students who are approved for emergency housing will be allowed to stay on campus until May 15th. Students must apply and be approved to qualify for emergency housing.

Can I return to campus to pick up personal belongings and move out later?

Students returning to campus will be required to check-out of their residence hall room. Exceptions will only be made for emergency situations and made on a case-by-case basis. If you have a question about returning to the halls to check-out, please contact the University Student Housing office (806) 742-2661 or housing @ttu.edu.

How frequently are common areas cleaned?

Our staff is cleaning and disinfecting daily. All high touch areas, such as door handles, faucet handles, flush handles, elevator buttons, and drinking fountains are disinfected a minimum of two times daily. USH rotates disinfectants to increase the effectiveness of eliminating germs.

If I can't return to campus can I get assistance with packing and shipping?

Students who are absolutely unable to return to campus or make other arrangements to retrieve their belongings are encouraged to contact the University Student Housing office at housing@ttu.edu. Any arrangements approved will not occur until after May 15th.
