Social media criticize Lubbock restaurant's marker board

Posted: Updated:

The Pancake House near Sixth Street and Avenue Q in Lubbock has been part of some online disputes the past few days. Some photos of the restaurant's marker board went up on Reddit and Facebook.

It states every election year since 2004 has had some sort of virus outbreak. It also tried to draw a connection between this year's election and the coronavirus, saying at the bottom the election is canceled. That is not the case. Snopes reports the years on that Facebook meme are not all accurate.

Jeff Stotts, restaurant owner, said a friend shared a picture of some of the information in a doctor's office. He said some of the other content written on the board was added by customers, including the political content.

Stotts emphasizes his business isn't political, but he has faced backlash from it.

"Everybody's entitled to their own opinion on things, you know, but don't make a war out of it," Stotts said. "I mean, that dude told me I was killing people. I said 'that sign's not killing anybody, it's just information that I got from another individual, I thought it was pretty neat, so I allowed it to be put up out here'."

Stotts says The Pancake House is taking every precaution it can, according to the CDC and state guidelines for cleaning.

His business is suffering due to the lack of customers. But he believes the restaurant will pull through it.
