Online classes possible: Homeschool parents offer help

Posted: Updated:

While Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper and Frenship I.S.D. extended Spring Break a week for students, staff are working on transitioning schooling materials to online.

Superintendent Kathy Rollo said after looking at the constant increase of Coronavirus cases, the district's decided to help slow its spread.

"We already have a lot of staff that uses online platforms all the time, but we will do some training with staff on what it looks like to facilitate that from home or wherever they may be working," Superintendent Kathy Rollo said.

Andi Cravy and Amy Jones both homeschool their children normally. They said although this possible change can be intimidating, it's doable.

"You shouldn't be scared of your kids and you shouldn't be afraid of what their education looks like because what happens in the end is you end up learning with them," Cravy said.

They said parents should try to use this change as an opportunity.

"If you have kids who have been struggling in school, this may be the chance that you get to work one on one with them and find out where the problem really is," Jones said.

They believe there are benefits to at-home learning.

"We were able to go faster in some areas and slower in other areas," Jones said.

"Just because you're sitting in a classroom for eight hours a day versus sitting at a kitchen table or hanging upside down on a couch, you're still learning," Cravy said.

As for tips to stay on track, Cravy said repetition is key.

"Keep to a schedule as much as possible so that they can transition back to public school fairly easy," Cravy said.

Lubbock I.S.D. will announce the next steps and if schools will officially switch to online learning by Wednesday, March 25.
