Covenant holding emergency blood drives

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Covenant Health Services is holding emergency blood drives over the next few weeks.

The need for blood has risen drastically due to canceled drives at Texas Tech and a lock of donors due to concerns over the coronavirus. Blood transfusions are crucial for day-to-day operations and supplies can only replenish through donations.

Donating is safe, there is no risk of contracting the coronavirus while donating.

"Nationwide there's been over four thousand blood drives canceled and over 130 thousand less donation over cornavirus fears...we're reaching out to anyone and everyone telling you that here locally in West Texas we have a great need for blood donations," Brandon Baker, senior recruitment manager Vitalant, said.

This week blood drives will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Knipling Education & Conference Center. Guest can park in the west parking garage located at 21st and Louisville. The conference center is located on the 6th floor of the parking garage.

Another blood drive will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24 near Covenant Children's. The exact location has not been announced at this time.

To donate blood, you must be at least 16 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. You must be in good health and haven't donated blood within eight weeks. Bring your ID. If you've recently traveled there are some additional restrictions.
