With the cancellation of the Houston Rodeo, organizers set up an Alternative Show for hundreds of students across the state to travel to Lubbock to show their pigs.
It is a way to honor the hard work the kids put in leaving up to the Houston and Austin shows. The event raised $272,000 in prizes for the winners.
Organizers tell us this event at the South Plains Fairgrounds was approved by city and county leaders. Since the city's disaster declaration does not go into effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, everyone was allowed to gather Monday.
"We've gone through extra precautions with disinfecting the barn, disinfecting the bathrooms," said organizer Will Winter. "To make sure that we're making sure, safety wise, that we're doing everything we can to make it safe for these kids."
Organizers say this was a one-time event. Winter says he hopes there will not be a need for it next year, with the Houston and Austin shows back on.
