UMC will soon offer clinic for patients with COVID-19 symptoms

Posted: Updated:

One of the most common questions we're receiving is where do you go if you think you have COVID-19 coronavirus. A representative for University Medical Center provided some clarification Friday.

UMC will soon have a fever and respiratory clinic, located next to the UMC Emergency Center. Anyone going to UMC with possible COVID-19 symptoms will be directed to this clinic.

Also, UMC's Virtual Care service, the MyTeamCareNow app, is now available. The public is encouraged to use this service instead of going to the clinic.

Testing is not yet available for everyone who thinks they may have COVID-19. This is not just in Lubbock, but the case nation-wide. Patients must meet specific criteria to be tested. According to UMC, this includes travel history and presence of symptoms. UMC reports, under CDC guidelines, more people are being rejected for tests than are accepted right now. Health care providers must first rule out other illnesses before testing for COVID-19, including flu and strep testing, and respiratory panels.

As of Friday morning there are more than 137,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide. In the United States there are 1,663 confirmed cases with 40 deaths. Of 28 confirmed cases in Texas most are travel-related, not community-transmitted. These numbers will continue to change by the hour.

As of Friday there are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lubbock County.

The City of Lubbock Health Department is updating local health care providers on conference calls twice a week. The department will hold news conferences every Monday. Here is information from Wednesday's city news conference.
