LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Rotary Club honored first responders Thursday night.

The Unsung Heroes ceremony recognized their service to our area. It pays tribute and gratitude for police, fire crews, paramedics, deputies and troopers.

The ceremony also commemorated the deaths of Officer Nicholas Reyna and Fire Lieutenant Eric Hill. They died working a crash in January.

Lubbock State Rep. Dustin Burrows noted the first responders dedication to protecting and serving.

"I pray the people hear what you want to do and the help you want to give because you can change lives, and you do change lives," he said. "Some of the lives you change may be your colleagues with brave uniforms and wear badges with you one day, and it's the things I wish we talked about more in this environment and the jobs that you guys do."

The ceremony awarded Fire Lieutenant Matt McGinnis, Lubbock Officer Ricky Benavides, paramedics Jacqueline Adams, Bryan Stewart and John White.

Texas Ranger Toby Catlin and Sheriff's Corporal Donnie Rogers were also recognized.

The Unsung Heroes awards started after 9-11 as a show of compassion for all first responders.
