LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Commander William C. McCool Academy hosted its first annual STEAM Festival.

Lubbock ISD's newest magnet middle school hosted the event for all fifth and sixth grade students and their families interested in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

The McCool Academy aims to give students access to hands-on activities to better prepare them for the future.

"We're preparing for them to be life-long learners, and to preparing them for the real world," Carolyn Wadley, McCool Academy Principal, said. "So when we're looking at, again, where the job growth is, where the job market is growing this is exactly where they need to be. And having they're hands on something rather than more of that sit and listen and be lectured to."

More than 20 Lubbock ISD programs and Lubbock-area partners represented each field.
