Lubbock non-profits discuss actions for affordable, quality childcare

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

In Lubbock, more than 20% of children younger than five live in poverty. Most don't have access to high-quality, affordable childcare.

The non-profit organization Children at Risk, along with Lubbock-Area United Way and South Plains Workforce Solutions, are working to improve the quality of and access to childhood education for low-income families.

The organizations hosted a round table discussion to determine solutions that will ensure the millions of dollars being allocated to early education produce positive results.

One way is to encourage more facilities to become certified by the state's quality rating improvement system, known as the Texas Rising Star.

"This is a way to give greater accountability over government dollars, but also give greater access and transparency to parents about the quality of the centers that they're child's raised in," Nneka Ibekwe, Director of Early Education for Children at Risk, said.

This is the sixth stop of a nine-city Texas tour.
