With Spring Break approaching TxDOT urges drivers to 'plan while you can'

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Last Spring Break there were more than 400 crashes across the state from drunk driving. Of those crashes, 26 resulted in fatalities.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging Tech students to find a sober ride home with the 'Plan While You Can' campaign. The department used virtual reality to show students the dangers of what could happen if they're caught under the influence behind the wheel.

"There's some huge consequences when you make that choice drinking and then getting behind the wheel," Dianah Ascencio, Lubbock TxDOT Public Information Officer, said. "We're trying to avoid that, we're trying to reminds students that they do have options and they do have a choice to make sure that they either have a sober ride home or they call an Uber or a Lyft for a ride home, or take public transportation."

The cost of a DWI can reach up to thousands of dollars in fines. Plus, offenders could receive jail time and risk losing their license.
