LUBBOCK, Texas -

Lubbock grand jurors have indicted and enhanced the charge for a man accused of robbing and killing a victim over drugs.

The grand jury believe the state can prove LaCharles Curtis, 40, shot and killed Jawhan Jones at the Coronado Inn last month.

Curtis is a felon who's already served time for drugs and weapon charges.

A witness told police he and Jones were smoking crack cocaine at the motel when Curtis drove up. A warrant shows when Jones got in the car to buy more drugs, Curtis tried to rob Jones then shot him three times.

Court records indicate Curtis gave police a similar time line of what happened, except he claimed someone else shot Jones.

If convicted for Jones' murder, Curtis faces a max sentence of life in prison with parole. The enhancement cities Curtis's criminal history and means the minimum he could serve is 25 years in prison.
