LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Medal of Honor of a Tech alumnus will be on display at the McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center.

The family of George O'Brien loaned the medal to the Texas Tech Alumni Association to tell the story of the 1950 Tech graduate.

While acting as Second Lieutenant during the first Battle of the Hook in 1952 during the Korean War, O'Brien led the capture of an enemy hill despite being wounded by enemy fire. A year later, he received the Medal of Honor presented to him by President Eisenhower.

Alumni Association CEO and President Curt Langford said it's an honor to house O'Brien's medal as a symbol of his legacy of service to our country and pride in his Alma Mater.

"Many of our alumni were not aware of this, I was not aware until the story came out. And we wanted to be able to share it with the rest of our alumni because overall that's the mission of the Alumni Association. Every Red Raider has a story -- George O'Brien's is historic, it's remarkable and it's a story that needs to be told," Langford said.

During the ceremony, fellow Medal of Honor recipient Michael Thorton spoke of his friendship with O'Brien and what it means being awarded the medal.
