LUBBOCK, Texas -

The Big 12 LGBTQIA & Allies Summit is a collaborative effort between Texas Tech, schools across the Big 12 and more.

The summit offers educational sessions covering a variety of topics including community support, allyship and LGBTQIA histories and spirituality.

Jodey Randall is the Director of the Office of LGBTQIA Education and Engagement. She said, particularly across the Big 12 and in West Texas, the conversation needs to be started.

"You can hold conservative values and still be an ally to the LGBTQ community. You can, like all these other identities, you're more than one thing," she said.

With the summit seeking to create more allies and educate the importance of inclusion.

"It's really about how we instill cultural competencies, both in our institutions of higher learning, but also in society in general," Randall said.

Former Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson now serves as National Co-Chair of Conservatives Against Discrimination. He said for some who share his similar values, it's important for them to show their support.

"A lot of the folks in my party don't share these views. But I have been struck by how many actually do, they just think they're small numbers or afraid to speak out," he said.

This was the third annual summit.

"We are tackling important issues in a time of significant social change," Randall said. "Our theme affirms the power we all have in charting what's ahead: 'This is my life. I'll decide my future.'"
