LUBBOCK -

Cary Shaw, a fence builder from Idalou, has won the nomination in the Republican race for northeast Lubbock County. He is trying to break the cycle of who has held the commissioner's seat for Precinct 3.

"It's very humbling to know that people heard my heart and trust me with their vote like this," Shaw said Tuesday night.

Shaw says he's not a politician. Just someone who wants to do good for the precinct.

His low-key, targeted campaign against Victor Flores and Ysidro Gutierrez was focused in the country between Idalou and Abernathy. No he has to convince voters to choose him over the Democratic incumbent.

"The people are tired of Gilbert," Shaw said. "Everything I've heard out on the campaign trail is 'where's he at?' He's not doing his job. He's not attending the commissioners' meeting. He's not keeping promises."

Shaw's victory could represent a shift in Precinct 3. Voters selected him over former commissioner Ysidro Gutierrez, who previously held the seat as a Democrat.

"They're tired of the Democrat Party," Shaw said. "So let's all get together and let's finish this job and let's turn Precinct 3 Republican. I promise you that we'll make Precinct 3 great again."

The hands-on fence builder says he acknowledges the hardest part of this race still lies ahead of him.
