Slaton High School has won $10,000 for its excellence in teaching. It's been named a finalist for the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching Award.

Slaton's one of five schools recognized for its meaningful, daily support for teachers. The NIET cites Slaton's collaborative and student centered approach to teaching calling it the foundation for sustainability.

"We believe that all kids can grown and learn, through that we have the hard conversations with teachers about what are they intentionally doing. We have the hard conversations with kids about how are you wanting to be better. And so being recognized nationally exposes what we do and what we believe in at a core, and how it can be done on all campuses," Associate Principal for Curriculum Instruction Stephanie Kieth said.

The NIET will recognize all five finalists at its conference in Indianapolis later this month.

All five are in the running for $50,000. The winner will be selected March 27th.
