Rain likely today and tomorrow
Meteorologist Bobby Johnston said today is mostly cloudy with the high near 56 degrees. Some rain is possible this morning to the south and southwest of Lubbock. Showers will lift north through the day. With all the humidity in place, it'll drop to around 40 degrees Wednesday morning.
States host primaries for Super Tuesday
It's the most important day of the 2020 presidential campaign thus far. Fourteen states from coast to coast hold primaries on a single day. Joe Biden heads into the day coming off a big weekend win in South Carolina and receiving two major endorsements from Pete Buttigieg and and Amy Klobuchar Monday. However, Democratic opponent Michael Bloomburg said he is the only candidate left that can beat President Trump. Meanwhile, front-runner Bernie Sanders said his campaign is the strongest it has ever been. Across party lines, President Trump has collected 86 out of the 87 delegates awarded so far.
Schools engage students in election process
Schools in our area are teaching students the importance of engaging in the democratic process. A government teacher at Lubbock-Cooper High School said his course is rooted in the Constitution and he teaches his senior students how that relates to the primaries. He also gets his older students to register to vote and encourages parents to instill in their kids the significance of their votes. A Lubbock I.S.D. teacher said she starts in third grade with the basics of how the country was founded and the roles of the three branches of government. For the full story: click here.
Statewide party primaries on Super Tuesday
Polls open this morning at 7:00 a.m. Along with President and Senator, you'll be choosing nominees for County leadership and Judges. The commissioner race for precinct three will be on both parties' ballots. Republicans will select District Judges and County Commissioner for South West Lubbock. Democrats will have challengers for Senator Cornyn and Lubbock Congressman Jodey Arrington. When you go to the polls, you'll need photo identification.
No Coronavirus in West Texas
According to the City's Health Department, there are no cases of the novel Coronavirus in our region. Citing reports of transmission in other parts of the country, Health Director Katherine Wells emphasizes the city is prepared for it. She said doctors are vigilant about travel histories and symptoms they see and city staffers are investigating any possible infections. Trump asks for expedited vaccine research
President Trump is urging pharmaceutical companies to speed up vaccine development. He's also asked several biotech companies to chip in on treatment options. The President predicts those will be available before a vaccine is. During a meeting with several reps from "Big Pharma," he emphasized he wants more medicine made in the United States. The President said that process started long before the Coronavirus outbreaks with tax breaks and other federal incentives.
