Texas Tech is among one of the CDC's labs that will be testing for the the novel Coronavirus.
The Department of Toxicology, Environmental and Human Health is at Reese Center. It is part of the CDC's laboratory response network. The FDA is sending out 15,000 kits to the network to test for the virus.
"The FDA is using a special kind of approval process, so at first they want very sophisticated laboratories that can do high complexity testing that might qualify for the initial testing," said John Hellerstedt, commissioner of state health services.
The commissioner hopes to have other testing available in El Paso, the Metroplex, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Corpus Christi and Harlingen.
