LUBBOCK, Texas -

"Either like a Grammy or an Oscar."

That is what a James Beard award means to the leaders in the food and wine industry.

For the second year in a row, McPherson Cellars has clinched the semi-finalist nomination for "Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer."

This year it is just 1 of 2 Texas producers nominated in that category.

"To be recognized, not only in Texas, but in Lubbock is just so significant not just for us but for Texas as a whole. Just because, it shows we play with the big dogs. And we do have what it takes to be up there," Thomas Turman, Director of Hospitality and Events at McPherson, said.

At the forefront, pioneer winemaker: Kim McPherson himself.

"It's just a significant, significant recognition of what we're doing here, what Kim McPherson has really laid the framework for, for all Texas wineries," Turman said.

"I've learned everything that I pretty much know from that man," Assistant Winemaker Spenser Igo said. "He is such a great wine maker. His style is so unique out here, he uses the land and the grapes to make some great wine."

McPherson's boasts thousands of awards but for the team it is not just about winning it is about seeing the progress made in just the last few decades.

"We don't enter competitions to be able to boast about them and to, you know, be able to flaunt it" Turman said. "The competitions are simply a grading scale for us to know that we're doing things right."

"For us to out this quality wine out there, and to be recognized from someone that we don't know, it's just, it's an honor," Igo said.

The finalists will be announced at the James Beard Gala on May 4th in Chicago.
