Felon charged in north Lubbock motel shooting
Investigators have arrested a man who previously served time on gun and drug convictions for the shooting death of Jawhan Jones at a north Lubbock motel Thursday.
LaCharles Curtis, also known as "Super Shawn" and "SS" is held on a $300,000 bond for the shooting at the Coronado Inn off of Interstate 27 near Erskine. Police were called to the motel just after 4 a.m. Jones was taken to the hospital, where he died.
According to the warrant, a witness said he and Jones were smoking crack cocaine in a room at the motel. The witness was able to identify Curtis from a photo lineup.
A witness, who said he spent time at the TDCJ's Allred Unit for a year with Curtis, told police Jones got into a vehicle to purchase more crack when Curtis tried to rob Jones at gunpoint, according to the warrant. When Jones tried to get out of the car, Curtis shot him three times, the witness said.
Police used surveillance video to corroborate some of the information provided by witnesses.
Curtis was arrested Friday for an outstanding traffic citation warrant. Once taken in, the warrant states Curtis provided a similar statement to witnesses with the key difference being he said someone else shot Jones. Police searched his home and found a revolver, which, according to the warrant, Curtis admitted was the gun used to kill Jones.
