Hanks, Rhys shine in Mister Rogers movie not really about Mister Rogers

Posted: Updated:

"A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" stars Tom hanks as children's television icon Fred Rogers. The movie's story is based on an article by reporter Tom Junod who wrote a piece on Mister Rogers and who had his life changed through his interaction with the television star.

Hanks was Oscar-nominated for his work as Mister Rogers, which my mom thinks kind of sounds like Forrest Gump at times. (She's not entirely wrong).

While Hanks is good here with the more flashy role, Matthew Rhys from "The Americans" did not get enough attention for his excellent leading role as reporter Lloyd Vogel - an emotionally damaged man burying childhood trauma among other secrets.

This movie isn't about Fred Rogers, really, and as a result, we don't get to know him much better. You should watch the wonderful documentary "Won't You be My Neighbor?" for that.

But there's some powerful stuff in this movie about forgiveness and healing.  It's manipulative, even predictable at times, but the good stuff sticks.
