LUBBOCK -

Coronado High School will retire the #1 jersey of former standout Mustang and Red Raider Jarrett Culver. A ceremony is planned at the school Tuesday, with Culver expected to attend.

The Minnesota Timberwolf was the sixth pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, after leading Texas Tech to the 2019 National Championship game. This season he's averaging 9.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game for the T-Wolves. The league is currently on its All-Star Game break.

Jarrett Culver attended Coronado from 2013 to 2017. Under Coach Randy Dean's leadership, Culver averaged more than 29 points per game his senior season, while also leading the Mustangs in assists and rebounds. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal named him Lone Star Varsity Player of the Year twice.

His brothers are also standout athletes. J.J. Culver is a 2016 Coronado graduate, a senior on the Wayland Baptist University basketball team. And Trey Culver graduated from Coronado in 2014. Trey, a two-time indoor high jump national champion, graduated from Texas Tech and now jumps professionally.

Jarrett Culver will turn 21 Thursday. Coach Dean, former Coronado basketball coach Layne Sheets and Tech Basketball coach Chris Beard are all scheduled at the event Tuesday. The pep rally is closed to the public.
