From Texas Tech Athletics:
Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park couldn’t contain the explosive Red Raider attack on Saturday as No. 3 Texas Tech went yard 11 times in a doubleheader sweep, taking a 24-3 win in seven innings over Houston Baptist before striking down Northern Colorado, 22-4, in front of 4,299 fans.
The Red Raiders (3-0) finished with 46 runs on 45 hits for the day and scored a run in every frame until the bottom of the eighth against UNC (1-1).
Freshmen Nate Rombach, Jace Jung and Cal Conley stole the show against HBU (0-3) with Rombach connecting on three home runs between the third and sixth innings and seven RBI. He added another dinger and four more RBI against UNC to finish the day with four home runs and 11 RBI. Jung went deep in both games as well, compiling nine RBI, while Conley went yard against HBU and then legged out an inside-the-park home run against UNC on his way to a multi-home run day.
The fireworks started early as Tech put up a 10-spot against HBU in the second for a 13-0 advantage. An inning later, the crowd came to life once more when Jung, Rombach and Conley went back-to-back-to-back to push the lead to 17-0. The offensive show continued into game two as Tech spotted UNC a run in the first before firing back with five in the home half, six in the second and three more in the third to stake a 14-0 advantage.
Conley and junior Dylan Neuse finished with five hits against UNC while redshirt freshman T.J. Rumfield added four and five other Red Raiders posted multi-hit efforts.
Both starters got the win Saturday in scheduled four-inning starts. Sophomore Austin Becker allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in his four innings, while junior Bryce Bonnin retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced with eight strikeouts. A solo homer in the first was his only blemish.
Texas Tech closes the four-game weekend with one more against Northern Colorado on Sunday. First pitch will take place approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the 11 a.m. matchup between HBU and UNC. Stay tuned to @TTU_Baseball for updates on the official start time. Sophomore lefty Mason Montgomery will make the start for Tech. Northern Colorado’s starter is TBD.
