Education is one of West Texas' strong assets

LUBBOCK COUNTY, Texas -

The "state of education" in our area is strong, according to one non profit focused on it. "Raise Your Hand Texas" invited administrators to discuss developments at the state level. It focused on the future of public schools, after a historic 2019 session.

Overall, lawmakers pumped billions of dollars into school finance and allowed across-the-board raises for educators. But administrators admit it wasn't all good news. For instance., one requirement the legislature saddled administrators with is "board goals." Those are targets the board must set years ahead of time.

Superintendent Michelle McCord said the Frenship district had a net gain in funding but the district *did* lose some funding sources, as well.

Lubbock ISD Assistant Superintendent Doyle Vogler said his district's biggest gain was in full day pre-k. He said that will allow the district to better support its at-risk students and families living in poverty.
