Democrat candidates for House Dist. 83 discuss education

Posted: Updated:

Two Democrats facing off in the primary next month are running to unseat republican Dustin Burrows to be the state rep for District 83.

James Barrick and Addison Perry Franks discussed education at a forum night Thursday. Both discussed HB3, the school finance reform bill that was signed into law.

Perry-Franks owns a small tech business in Snyder. She cites public education as a pillar in her campaign.

"We don't need to discard what's in HB3, we need to add to it," Perry-Franks said. "We need to make sure that more funding is for teachers, more funding for school districts, more funding for everything for school districts. Don't take away something just to give you this."

Barrick is a retired Texas Tech geology professor.

"What we need to do is the same thing they did for highway funding: they took dedicated amounts of state sales tax and said 'it's going to be only used for highway funding'," Barrick said. "It's too bad that the state isn't as interested in funding children as it is in highways."

Burrows, who was one of the leaders in crafting HB3, is running unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Early voting for the primaries starts Tuesday, Feb. 18. State-wide voting is Super Tuesday, March 3.
