INTERVIEW: Grace for 99th District Court

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Early voting for the March primaries begins Tuesday, and this week we've focused on judicial candidates -- specifically, the 99th District Court. Judge Bill Sowder is retiring, and four Republicans are running to take his place.

John Grace, a guest on the News@Nine Thursday, said his varied 26 years of experience in court sets him up as the prime candidate.

He said he's not worried about a crowded docket, saying Judge Sowder has stayed on top of it -- and if he's elected, he said he plans to keep attorneys on-task and on schedule.

As mostly a civil court the 99th District doesn't typically hear felonies, but overcrowded dockets in other courtrooms could force a change; Grace said he's the only candidate with real experience in that.

Since no Democrat has filed to run in this race, whoever wins the primary will take the seat. The two-week early voting period begins Tuesday, Feb. 18; the primaries are on Super Tuesday, March 3.
