Lubbock Fire Rescue offers free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Posted: Updated:
LUBBOCK, Texas -

Residents are 50% more likely to survive a fire if they have working smoke detectors in their homes.

Lubbock Fire Rescue is offering a potentially live-saving program that offers free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to Lubbock citizens. The goal is to get detectors into every home in the city.

Division Chief Steve Holland says these alarms are crucial in saving lives. He emphasized the importance of regularly checking devices and ensuring that they're working properly.

"You can have a smoke detector, but if your batteries aren't good, if you're not checking them or changing the batteries, you know, it's just like not having one," Chief Holland said. "So, we encourage people that have smoke detectors to continue to maintain those."

The department's detectors come with a 10 year battery life.

There's three ways to register:

• Call 311 and make a request
• Request a smoke detector online
• Email requests to firesafety@mylubbock.us
