Lubbock ISD breaks ground on north Lubbock elementary school

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Construction is underway on Lubbock ISD's new merged elementary school in north Lubbock.

Students helped turn the first dirt Thursday morning at the site of the old Mahon campus north of Ave. U and Cesar Chavez.

This project will merge Guadalupe, Wright and Jackson Elementaries. The location is right in the middle of those. The $25 million campus is intended to help revitalize that part of town.

"We are right here on a Lubbock lake and so we want to make sure to take advantage of that and incorporate that into the learning opportunities available for our students," Superintendent Kathy Rollo said. "We're looking at having some special programming that honors the culture and tradition of the communities in north Lubbock as well as some different focus that will be a draw for students from all over our area."

The school was part of the bond package voters approved back in 2018.

Superintendent Rollo said the schools will save the district money in the long run and provide more services for educators and students.

It's intended to be finished in the fall of 2021.
