Jury hears mother's initial statement in son's death

Posted: Updated:

On day three of Madison Rodriguez's trial the jury heard the second part of the defendant's initial statement to police. Rodriguez is facing an aggravated assault charge in her son's death in 2015.

Former Lubbock Police Detective John House testified something seemed suspicious about Rodriguez's behavior during the interview. The prosecution claimed Rodriguez had only cried for 4.5 minutes after she was informed about her one-year-old's death. And, they say, she referred to him in the past tense, before she knew he had died.

The defense lawyer called into question the officers' training. The defense claimed they intimidated the witness, who was 18 at the time.

If convicted of aggravated assault, Rodriguez could face probation to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
